10 Most Expensive Records Sold in 2024 by Car Boot Soul Records

Every now and then, we stumble upon a true treasure, whether through a bundle of old classics or from our network of trusted suppliers. We’re proud to share our top ten most expensive sellers from last year.

10) Rolling Stones – Sticky Fingers (1st Press1971 Large Zip)

Famously designed by Andy Warhol, this original zipper-cover pressing is a collectible classic - the large zip with PAN written on it is the rarer sleeve - just watch out for your other records. When the record was first released and they realised the zip was causing damage to the record they employed a legion of ladies to pull the zipper down so that it sat next to the label rather than the vinyl.

9) Led Zeppelin – Untitled (1st Press 1971)

This is the 5th of 9 known 'plum' label variations. Specific features for the release are; 'Marketed by Polydor Records Limited' at 6 o'clock on the labels, 'Under license from Atlantic Recording Corpn.' in white area under 'Atlantic' on left side., 'Led Zeppelin' is printed above spindle hole etc! It’s amazing the otherwise useless information you learn to love collecting records!

The Beatles - Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band (Lp Album Mono 1St) Uk 1967 Nm Or M- Lp

8) The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1st Press 1967 Fourth Proof)

That “Fourth Proof” detail is the stuff of Beatles lore. Fourth Proof designates the slightly altered artwork proof used before the final print run and means that this is one of the very earliest pressings.

Shop Beatles

7) The Beatles – Revolver (UK 1st Press withdrawn mix 1966)

An iconic album for shifting The Beatles into more experimental territory, and these rare mix pressings are the holy grail for completists. Look for matrix numbers -2 on the A side and -1 on the B side.

Shop Beatles

6) The Stooges – The Stooges (1st Press 1969)

Raw, energetic, and possibly the first punk record all the way back in 1969, this pressing captures Iggy Pop & Co. at their gritty best. This record is rarer than an Iggy Pop quiet night in, especially in the condition this beauty was in. This was the only record on this list that was sold via auction on Ebay.

5) Sun Ra & His Arkestra – Secrets of the Sun (1st Press 1973 El Saturn)

Self-released on El Saturn, it doesn’t get more cosmic than this—both musically and in sheer rarity. This record did not even have the original sleeve and still made it to this list!

Shop Free Jazz

4) Dizzy Reece – A New Star (1st Press 10” 1955 Tempo)

Proof that sometimes great things do come in smaller packages—just 10 inches of pure jazz brilliance. Jamaican-born trumpeter Dizzy Reece’s collectible release on Tempo Records remains a prized piece for jazz enthusiasts. Stunning condition for a 70 year old record.

3) 13th Floor Elevators – The Psychedelic Sound of the 13th Floor Elevators (1st Stereo Press 1966 US)

Psychedelic pioneers who made everyone question if that jug band sound was from another dimension. Few albums capture the birth of psychedelic rock more authentically—this first stereo press is living rock history.

Shop Psyche LPs

2) Aphex Twin – Ambient Dub Works Volume II (UK 1st Press Warp)

Richard D. James’s seminal album - originals in great condition are super rare, and Warp pressings always hold their value (except maybe when they release a new remastered 4xLP set!). Look out for the Brown vinyl pressings which are originals too but do not sound as quite as good.

Shop Electronic/Broken Beat

1) Pink Floyd – The Dark Side of the Moon (1971 1st Press Solid Blue)

A masterpiece revered by audiophiles, these solid-blue triangle labels signal you’ve scored a true first-run gem. This copy was in true Near Mint condition with all the original artwork and inserts. Wow!
